Riga city tour consists
of two parts - a panorama drive by bus along streets of Riga's
downtown and walking in Riga’s Old Town.
1st part (duration ~1,5 hr)
During the panorama drive you'll
see the most famous sights of Riga. The bus drives along the
embankment of the River Daugava, providing wonderful panoramic
view of the city. It follows through the center of the town
to Jugendstil district, Alberta Street - the real open-air
architectural museum, where the most explicit collection of
Art Nouveau buildings in Europe is located. The City Tour
follows through the modern part of the city. You'll observe
University building, National Opera, Academy of Arts and central
train station. The 1st part ends at the entrance to the Old
Town.
2nd part (duration ~ 1,5 hr)
During the guided tour you'll walk
along the narrow streets of the Medieval Hanseatic Old town
and enjoy the splendors of the Dome cathedral, Old Guild house,
Riga castle and the architectural wonders of Jugendstil district.
Walking tour starts at the Monument
of Freedom, the national symbol of Latvia. You'll admire the
newly renovated Opera House (optional tour of Opera House
is available upon request). From there the tour takes you
to Konveta Seta, a small district of ancient buildings, where
now a modern hotel complex and boutiques are situated.
On one of the most beautiful town
squares Bremen Musicians Monument, a present of town Bremen
to Riga, is erected. St. Peters Church was constructed in
1209, and for quite a long time it was the highest wooden
construction in Europe. On the top of the tower one of the
famous Riga guardian - cockerel sits. From there the tour
moves to Ratslaukums (Town Hall Square), that was the central
square of the city from 13th up to 19th century.
The most famous building of the square
is the magnificent gothic House of the Blackheads. The house
was build a in 1334 by the merchant association of the Great
Guild of the Hanseatic union, that had great influence on
the economic and politic situation in Europe during that period,
and was frequently used to hold meetings and host celebrations
headquarters of the guild. The building was destroyed in 1941,
now it has been carefully rebuilt for the celebration of Riga`s
800th anniversary. The Dome cathedral, situated on the Dome
Square, was built in 1211. In the 16th century, a unique organ
was placed in the cathedral, and even nowadays it is considered
to be one of the best organs in the world. Nearby there is
Riga castle. Originally it was a residence of Livonian order
grand master, but now it is the residence of the President
of Latvia. The program of the tour also includes visits to
many historical and architectural monuments like Jackob's
Barracks, Swedish Gates, Powder Tower, etc.
