The Latvian National
Theater is situated in one of the most beautiful buildings in
Riga. It was built in 1899–1902 by the architect A. Reinberg.
The facade is decorated with Riga's coat of arms and the attributes
of Russian Tzars. The front sculptures are made by A. Folz.
The theater was founded in 1919 by
the playwright A. Upitis. From 1940 to 1989 it was known as
Drama Theater named after Upitis. In 1989, the theater was
given back its original name. For eight decades, this grand
theater preserves the traditions of Latvian drama school.
It has survived World War, Soviet power, social turmoil and
the renaissance of national culture. Nowadays it is one of
the biggest theaters in Latvia.
